Amazing Animals Project

In this project, students were asked to create four illustrations consisting of one encyclopedic, one gesture, one logo and one transformation drawing. As you can see, a hamster was chosen as the main subject for these illustrations.

Client: Student Project
Role: Production Artist
Size: 7x7 in.
Software/Media: Graphite, Ink, Adobe Photoshop CC 2024, Adobe Illustrator CC 2024
Reference Photo
This is the photo which the student project was based off of. It was photographed by Sara Zambo. The photo has been desaturated and sized to a 7x7 square for ease of reference.
Over 30 gesture drawing were made in the process of this project. This drawing was the one which best captured the essence and weight distribution of the hamster and reference image.
Logo
The logo drawing of the hamster was made to stand out wherever it is displayed. It has been inverted to better show the mass of the hamster rather than just an outline. In order to test to durability of the design to make sure it shows up on all scales, it must pass the shrink test. A total of around 18 of these logos were made and tested.
The Shrink Test
Encyclopedic
An encyclopedic drawing was done to capture the exact likeness of a hamster you may see in an encyclopedia or dictionary. This hamster has been drawn with various highlights and shadow to best show this.
Transformation
Transformation drawing was produced to show the different animals and ideas to which these animals could be transformed into. 9 transformations were made, however the cowboy hamster turned out the best. It shows how two completely different ideas can come together to make something visually appealing and humorous.
